Anyone have any experience using a Theramin and Max?

I would like to use a Theramin as the source of a control
signal to control things in Max. I was wondering if anyone
out there has tried this. What else would I need to convert
the signal in to something Max can use? Can anyone recommend
something for signal conversion? Any recommendations
on Theramins would be welcome too.

A MIDI Theremin would be the best place to start. You can then do whatever you want with the incoming data - see the Max tutorial "Using MIDI Data" on how to get started.

I've used a big briar (http://www.bigbriar.com/detail.php?main_product_id=14) theremin for years. You can save yourself a little money by building the kit. Its not difficult and a lot of fun to build your own instrument.

A MIDI Theremin would be easier to use as a controller but you can use pitch tracking with an object like fiddle~ and a normal theremin. (Do a search on pitch tracking and max/msp and you will find many resources.)

Fiddle~ to get the pitch antenna and rms detection for the volume antenna
does work... But you can't of course get the pitch if you are touching the
volume antenna as there is no sound to analyse...

Thanks for the links you guys. I don't think the
MIDI Theramin would give me the resolution I am
looking for. I need something that will give me finer
control. pitch~/fiddle~ would probably work well.
Although ideally I would prefer a raw conversion of
the control signal and no mapping to a predefined pitch
tuning, that way I can map it to anything I want.

Thanks,
Anthony

The DOEPFER theremin module A-178 (http://www.doepfer.de/a178.htm) produces
a variable control voltage that may be used with their own Voltage-to-MIDI
interface (http://www.doepfer.de/a192.htm), but i think it should work also
with a different sensor interface like the Teabox for a higher resolution
(if i'm not wrong, the A-178 gives you control voltages in the range
0...+5V)
