Arduino: augmenting inputs

Hello folks! Is there anyone who knows how to augments Arduino's digital inputs for MAX? I found a little tutorial on Arduino's website (http://www.arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/ShiftIn) and it seems easy to build but the thing is that I have no idea about how Max will understand this! If anyone of you had tried this before or has a different solution I'll be really happy about that!
    Thanks everybody.

It's the software on the Arduino that is supposed to understand what comes from the shift register and send the datas in the format that best suits your needs in Max. You should have a look to the code samples on the tutorial.
