Try quitting Max and trashing your Max 5 preferences folder:

~/Library/Preferences/Max5 Preference Folder

I don't know about specific problems with that interface, but trashing preferences is always a good bet. I have corrupted my preferences a number of times bydisconnecting my MOTU while max is still open.
