Is it possible to route multi channel audio directly to the hdmi output ? thinking as hdmi can carry 5.1 or 7.1 audio. i could use my sound system in surround mode via max/msp. or even use a ' HDMI to 7.1Channel Audio Converter' as a "DAC".

Should be. I have an Onkyo TX-NR686 7.1 (using as Atmos 5.1.2) at home; when hooked up to a Mac Mini, the Onkyo shows up as an 8-channel HDMI device under the Audio Status device menu.
