Audio Units
Is there a way to load an Audio Unit as part of a patch?
This seemed to be a bit of a problem a while ago, has it been resolved at all? I've tried the au~ external, but this seems to crash out 5.07 at least.
I used the VST Bidule plugin successfully inside Max5 (also available as a 16 and 32 channel version). Inside Bidule, you're able to host any AU Plugin with full parameter access via the parameter mapping feature in Bidule. Make sure you use the vst~ - object of the next incremental update because the one in 5.0.7 is buggy (syslogd errors blah blah...). You can get the new one here:
Hope this helps.

Yeah, this would be ideal but I find it crashes too easily.
Maybe my computer, but it doesn't seem too stable to me.
Hi - could you clarify? Do I need to purchase Bidule, then run it (running au plugins) as a vst plugin under Max? If this works reliably it's probably worth the outlay for me just to get Mike Norris's plugins back! Does it use much cpu power/
thanks
Alistair
Hi Alistair,
that's exactly the way to go. Use of cpu power is very modest (on an macbookpro from 2007). I used it with several instances of 16 channel AppleAUs. Bidule is USD75. You only have access to the vst version of bidule if you buy it (but it's definitely worth it, not only because of it's plugin versions).

At Expo74, one of the participants asked that [au~] be part of Max, and what I remember - as I tell you, what I remember - is that someone from the cycling74 team let the audience know that it would be done. Unfortunately, we didn't know if it was on the list for Max 5.0.8, 5.5, or 6 (hope it's not for 7). Also unfortunate, it was not an official announcement.
If you just need an AU plugin, without driving its parameters from inside Max, it might work to use the free Apple AU lab (developer tools) and route sound with Soundflower or something like that.
