Automation problems using hi object

I am creating a plugin which is controlled via a playstation style joystick.

Within Cubase the joystick controls successfully modulate pp parameters in real time, but for some reason automation data cannot be recorded by Cubase. I have tried using max interface objects as a workaround (i.e. toggles and sliders) but nothing seems to work. The strange thing is that the controller is directly manipulating a toggle or slider and automation data is not recorded but using the mouse on the toggle/slider means it is recorded. Max must have some kind of protection to stop automation data being recorded by anything other than mouse click etc. Is there any way around this?
