BlackMagic UltraStudio & Canon XL2

Hello,

I'm having some trouble getting my Canon XL2 up and running as a live video feed using the BlackMagic UltraStudio Recorder 3G. I keep getting this error message when i try to open the video stream:

jit.grab: Blackmagic device - searching for valid video input format
jit.grab: Blackmagic device unable to find valid video input format - closing stream

I tried the whole list of formats and nothing is working. Am I missing something?

The Dev list gives two options also:
Blackmagic UltraStudio Recorder 3G
UltraStudio Recorder 3G [Native]

Any ideas or solutions would be most appreciated! Thanks.

Innerdub,
What is the connection between the XL2 and the Blackmagic Ultrastudio?
It has a SDI (Serial Digital Interface) input, not analog. Are you using a converter?
The XL2 has an analog output.
Cheers,

Hi B,

i was trying to go direct from the XL2 into the BlackMagic using this cable (see below). i thought the BM was a converter, do i need a second one to go from analog to digital? if so... what type should i get?

Thanks for the quick reply. trying to get it sorted for a show coming up soon.

Hello Innerdub,

Did you have to install a driver so jit.grab recognise the Blackmagic device as a webcam ?

I am wondering if the "UltraStudio 4K Mini" will also work as a webcam .

Yes, i installed the BmUs drivers and it recognized it fine. The issue was the analog Canon camera. Just added a composite to hdmi converter before the BmUs and it works great now. going to get a S-video to hdmi converter to see if the picture quality is any better, but the difference will probably be minimal....

i would love to try the UltraStudio 4k Mini, but it's $1000! the BlackMagic UltraStudio Recorder 3g i am using now was only $125

I am still wondering if there is a different SD/SDi or BNC cable that would work to go directly from the XL2 into the UltraStudio Recorder without having to use an upscaler or another digital converter.... Does anyone have experience with this?

Hey Innerdub, The output of the XL2 is analog, the input of the UltraStudio Recorder is digital, some sort of conversion needs to take place. Blackmagic has other capture devices that have analog inputs that will take a feed directly from the XL2.

The UltraStudio Mini HD has both SDI and analog inputs -

If I remember correctly, the XL2 has an IEEE 1394 firewire port which could be used with either an older computer or firewire card?

Hi Billy,

Thanks for reply. I would love to get the BM Mini HD, would make things much easier, maybe after a couple more gigs i'll invest in one.

FIrewire woorks great of course and still use it with my 2012 Macbook, however i much more enjoy using my new M2 Macbook with Jitter and i haven't found a good firewire converter yet.

In the mean time this will have to be my setup to use the analog XL2 camera with my new Macbook. If anyone has any better ideas or know a better approach, please let me know.

Canon XL2 (S-Video out) >>> Tendak (S-Video to HDMI) >>> Blackmagic UltraStudio Rec 3G (HDMI to Thunderbolt >>> Macbook

Thanks for all the help!
