'Blog software' needed for my new personal site. What do you use for your blog ?
Hi,
I'm a true newbie in this. I want to create a "blog-like" personal web site (i already have a domainname and use dreamweaver). I'm seeing lot's of "blog-like" personal web sites from maxmsp users, so i'm curious about how do you do this guys ? You're using a kind of 'blog-software', right ? which one ?
I'm also interested by theses caracteristics :
- Simple to use and of look.
- vertical size of the 'articles' on the web page the thiner/lighter/simpler possible.
- Maybe the possibility to antedate some old stuff i want to put online.
Thanks,
one word:
WORDPRESS
hope it helps.

This one is easy and accessible too,
With wordpress you get even a free hosting, no dreamweaver necessary, no domain necessary (I don't mind the wordpress in the domain name...) Not much space in the free version, but to host music I can use Soundcloud, for movies there is Vimeo, to host other files I simply use my Dropbox...
All you need for free...
Stefan
Thanks for your answers,
> "With wordpress you get even a free hosting, no dreamweaver necessary, no domain necessary (I don't mind the wordpress in the domain name...)"
But if i prefer to host this wordpress-personal-blog myself, in my domain, it's possible, right ?
Yes wordpress.com is a service that lets anyone sign up for a wordpress blog. wordpress.org provides the software for download so you can install it on your own server (with your own domain). Choice is yours!
As another useful fact, wordpress have an iPhone app too if that's of any use to you? So you can update it on the go.
Thanks, good to know!
Does somebody knows if i can "antedate" posts to a wordpress blog to put a correct date on some old stuff i want to put online ?
yes, even without customization there is an interface to change dating of blogs(you can even write a blog, set the date to be published somewhere in the future and it'll wait to publish until then)
from this page:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Writing_Posts
you can see down in the "Publish Box" section:
"To schedule a post for publication on a future time or date, click "Edit" in the Publish area next to the words "Publish immediately". You can also change the publish date to a date in the past to back-date posts..."
and i'm also pretty sure you can edit all tags, info, and dates on any blogs already published.

Thanks! i found it. It's nice that you can edit everything, and apparently, also after publication.
I also looking for a way to post stuff in English, French, Spanish on the same blog, and some of my post might be bilingual, so maybe a box on the side to select the language would perfect, i'm searching on the web..
hmm, wondering... looking at benefits of .com, and cons of .org, i might prefer .com, the free hosting online...
...but then if i understand well, i can't use a bilingual plug-in with .com... ?
> "Not much space in the free version"
Well, i've read 3Gb, for me that's a lot...
I use and recommend wordpress.com as the normal features are free and I don't have to worry about software updates and the like. You can use your own domain name and get rid of the "wordpress" bit in the blog URL (this wouldn't be free though). You can also set each language as a category and then pick a theme which supports custom menus and add these categories into the menu to easily display all posts in a certain language. I've paid for the no-ads and CSS customisation upgrades on my blog too which gives me a little bit more control of how it all looks. As mentioned before it is really easy to have music and video included if you have a vimeo and soundcloud account.
> "You can also set each language as a category"
Yes i was wondering about that. Or maybe, finally even more simple, i'll do a different blog for different languages, (which would concern mostly different subjects)
One thing doesn't seem so convenient with wordpress.com : I doesn't appears to be possible put a simple .zip on it !! (you have 3Gb but only for images and sound !?)
> "I've paid for the no-ads..."
?? What do you mean ? If you don't pay, where do you see ads ?
Thanks,
Non-logged in users may see google ads on individual post pages on wordpress.com blogs. These attempt to be related to your site and post content (but don't always quite manage). The ads keep the whole service free for everyone but if you want to get rid of the ads (because you're a business and you don't want competitors ads showing automatically on your site, or just because they're super-ugly and you have good taste) you can head to the upgrades section and purchase the upgrade to remove them for a year. It would still work out cheaper than a years worth of hosting costs.
Unfortunately for zip files you have to find somewhere else to host them, there are plenty of free services. If you are sharing max patches as I often do you can use the sourcecode shortcode to display the JSON/compressed text which makes copy-paste really easy.
To host a .zip I use my Dropbox account. You get minimum 2 GB of space, and for anything you put into your public folder, you can place a URL into your wordpress blog. That way its easy and transparent, and updating that file is as easy as drag and drop into the public folder on your home computer to replace it. I would even use dropbox, if I could upload files to wordpress just for that convenience...
They also have a referral system. If you use the link below to register, we would get both 250 MB of space extra...
https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTI4ODMwNTk?src=global0
Of course you can sign up without any referral as well...

What are you saying ???
Without being logged-in, when i look at my page, or stefan tiedje's page or other pages, i don't see any ads !
And reading this, i feel you are wrong : http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/ :
They say that YOU can choose to put ads on your blog and then share the money 50/50 with wordpress.com, that's really different about what you say.
I hope that you just interpreted a bit too much while seeing ads on some blogs, because if you are right that would mean that wordpress is not honest at all... And would really hate that, so please can you clarify ?
Ads are mostly a pollution more in our lives, and I hate the fact that they are, on some web commercial sites, coming little by little like moths in your wardrobe..
@Stefan: dropbox: This is a good idea.
Thanks,
My bad.. i even didn't read the end of the page linking to this : http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2008/09/18/go-ad-free/ ...so the No-ads update is $30 per year, well..
I really don't find there page about benefits/cons of .com and .org honest. ( http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ this one i read it carefully ) Being honest would have been to write that .com may include some google ads without warning.
About Soundcloud : To be able to look at the waveform while listening is nice, but i find the funny comment-feature not so usefull in fact : The logging-in necessity to comment is always boring on web sites..
Plus it appears to fail connection sometimes : For example, Luke, your sounds on http://hallluke.wordpress.com/2009/12/04/birthday-club/ were saying "this track is currently not available" few hours ago. Does this happen often ?
Well in their defence it does provide a link to the paid upgrades page and mention under the pros and cons that wordpress.org will let you run advertisments. It's a small price to pay for what you get. I've never noticed the soundcloud embeds not working. I just checked it out and it was working for me.
The sharing ad revenue option is only available for sites receiving a fair amount of traffic so not everyone gets the option of doing this.
Going the wordpress.org route is the other option, there's a list of recommended hosts you can find, you can run all the ads you like and set up e-commerce etc you just have to take care of all the annoying technical bits!
Now it's working here too,
“You Want To” ..nice little teenage song. :-)
Wordpress is awesome. If you like using Max, you're probably not afraid of a little programming, so I would recommend hosting your own wordpress installation over using their hosted service. When you host it yourself you have full control over look and feel, plugins, etc.
So finally...

Thanks everyone,
I'm glad to see you get everything up and running, definitely look in to some of the more visually appealing themes you can use!
Year, i was looking on themes, but i find it hard to find some that are as simple and clear as the default.
