Check out Todd Winkler's Composing Interactive Music-Techniques and Ideas Using Max. It's entirely focused on Max and a bit dated these days, but has a lot of really good ideas for approaching the logic and concepts of thinking in the MaxMSP environment.
i think todd winklers book is really very outdated nowadays. its certainly interesting but i wouldnt spend the money on it to learn the basics of max. get peter elseas max tutorial which can befound at ftp://arts.ucsc.edu/pub/ems/maxtutors/ - they are truely excellent and up to date and more pleasant to read than the pd-tutorial (at least to me). i never understood why there is no link to them on his website - mabye some university policy?
a similar to winklers but less outdated book is robert rowe´s machine musicianship (mit press)
