I read about this recently. It looks good. Focuses on PD but is probably real useful for Max/MSP, too.

. It's entirely focused on Max and a bit dated these days, but has a lot of really good ideas for approaching the logic and concepts of thinking in the MaxMSP environment.

i think todd winklers book is really very outdated nowadays. its certainly interesting but i wouldnt spend the money on it to learn the basics of max. get peter elseas max tutorial which can befound at 

 - they are truely excellent and up to date and more pleasant to read than the pd-tutorial (at least to me). i never understood why there is no link to them on his website - mabye some university policy?

a similar to winklers but less outdated book is robert rowe´s machine musicianship (mit press)

I would easily as well recommend Peter Elsea's tutorial books on all of Max MSP and Jitter 

They are for Max 4. But can easily be attached to Max 5...

todd winkler's book , yes a little outdated maybe , but still very well written and has some great and and very valuable approach ideas, (wish he would do a new one , though !!!!!!)

Coming to think of it , I would love to see cycling74 make a book on the subject !! !!! !!
