buffer~ can't open file, well, just one

I can load any of my sound files into buffer~ if I use a "read" message. But if I try "read it only works on the soundfiles that came with Max/MSP. I have reset the search path a number of times, I've tried converting the sound files to various forms of AIFF, but nothing seems to work. Is Max/MSP picky about sound files? That doesn't seem to make sense, since it can open them after the "read" window comes up. I'm stumped.

Am I missing something obvious?

Though, this puzzles me too. When I specify the search paths, they never show when I click on the "show paths" button in the lower left of the window. Is that a clue?

if you add the path that your patch (and audio files) are in, does that work?

alternatively, with [opendialog fold] --> prepend prefix --> [umenu] --> prepend read, that should work to specify the complete path dynamically, and for the end users (who don't have the File Preferences option).

seejay, nice to hear from you again. I take it that you're warning me that if I use prepend to load the buffers, I can't "give" this application to anyone, because it won't work without the file preferences, right?

I'll try it. In the meantime, I have a little chunk of maxcode you helped me with (so long ago) incorporated in the "Diano" at this link

very best, jawny

The Audio files "can't open" (says the Max window) even if I put them in the same folder as my patcher. However, the cello-f2.aif and vibes-a1.aif files that came with Max/MSP load just fine no matter where they are. It seems my files are to blame, not the search path.

I couldn't get your "opendialog" idea to work, either.

More later,
