buffer~ foo.aiff: can't open

Hi,

I just downloaded MAX/MSP for a trial run as I have worked with pure data for a while and am looking to expand into Max etc.

I've installed correctly (i think...) but can't get buffer~ to accept any files without going through the file browser. e.g. a message: 'read foo:aiff 500 500' just returns 'buffer~ foo.aiff: can't open' This is happening in all the demo files and any files I create myself.

Can anyone offer advice to correct this as I'm assuming it's a software issue rather than my ignorance if it's happening with the demo files!

Thanks in advance

It sounds to me like a path problem. Are the files you are trying to
find in a search path?
(Options menu -> File Preferences)

What happens when a sound file is in the same folder as the patch that
is trying to load it?

Have you tried specifying a full path? (this can be a little tricky.
watch out for spaces in the path, for example)

thanks for the reply.
the files are in the same folder to the max file. what's strange is that sometimes (after a software restart) it works, i.e. will read the files, then a few minutes in it can't read them...
i'll play around with a few things and see if it can be solved.
thanks again
