Can't use Max 7 file browser anymore
Hi!
I just added a big folder with samples to browser and now I only see a progress icon, but not the file list. I tried to uncheck “Incl.Built-in Content” and to use “path:” to search the files with no luck. Also I have no additional entry in File Preferences...
Also now Max uses 200% of my CPU with no patches open, according to Activity Monitor.
How can I reset the file browser to its initial state?
Best,
Eugene
yeah, the system has a real, acute problem with larger numbers of samples. I can't use it either :-/
Eugene and I can't be the only people with many samples... is anybody else having this problem?
Yeah, I don't see any other logical way to add my library to browser (still using Finder for that).
I solved problem with browser not responding by deleting file santa--applications-max.maxdb
from ~/Library/Application\ Support/Cycling '74/Max 7
. Santa is my partition's name.
Yeah, same experience here, I have close to half a TB of samples and audio, I initially selected my whole audio archive in folder preferences, which was a mistake. I ended up deleting the preferences file and starting again, as it made Max 7 unusable, I just assumed the browser wasn't meant for massive archives like that. Interesting to hear that others have the same issue though.
Sounds like we have some work to do to deal with massive file libraries. It sounds like Max is harvesting your samples into the internal database, though. For 500GB of data, it might take a while, but if the harvesting is done (there's no progress indicator in the browser) and it's simply unresponsive, then we clearly need to address this in an update. Thanks for letting us know.

I had a similar experience: https://cycling74.com/forums/can-i-reset-what-is-in-the-file-browser-to-the-defaults/ trying to add about 56gb of files to the library. It did get there, but the browser was pretty slow to use. Check the thread linked for an easier way of resetting the database.
It would be great to be able to have subfolders (or sub-collections) within collections, so you could keep the file structure of your sample library within the Max browser.
After I added my "older" paths to Max 7's File preferences (and yes, they were large), I could no longer save attributes to objects. No matter how I tried, I couldn't make a red message and a green message and save them; they would be default-gray when reopened. Finally, I uninstalled Max -including preferences- and reinstalled and it works fine. Thought it might help.
A similar issue happened to me when trying to import a large file library into the browser. I had to completely uninstall and reinstall Max 7.
