Capture two video streams with jit.grab

Hi all,
There have been topics about this, but neither of them answered my question. So here we go:

I have the job to capture the video signals from two Macbooks (simple video out) into a third Macbook for further processing in Max (jit.grab would be my friend here). Both signals must be fed into the third computer simultaneously. I am thinking about getting two Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Recorders, but I'm no way sure this will work. This is the first time that I'm doing something with live video.

What would the optimal solution for this task be? Is it possible to connect to identical devices and then address them separately with two instances of jit.grab? Or should I go for a dual stream device and then go from there? I'm at a loss and would appreciate some help.

Thanks in advance,
Matthias

in theory two ultrastudio devices should do the trick. you should contact blackmagic and get their input as well. i'll be happy to work through any issues that come up on the jit.grab side of things.

Thanks for the confirmation, Rob. I'll see if I can get in touch with blackmagic.

I've not tried this with the built-in jit.grab object, but I can confirm that this is possible using multiple Blackmagic input devices via Black Syphon. You'd need the Jitter syphon objects for Max as well.

Even after getting a vague confirmation from Blackmagic, I'm still not sure if two identical (and I mean two identical models of Ultrastudio Recorders) will work simultaneously. A local distributor has some doubts. So I'd have to get my hands on two units and try it out..

But thanks for your input!

Yes, I can confirm that I've used two of the UltraStudio Mini Recorders simultaneously with Black Syphon and it worked fine.

I think the bigger question is: will the Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Recorder work with an RGB source? I've been repeatedly told by Blackmagic that their equipment supports YUV input only, although I've heard of people using the Intensity PCI-e card to capture RGB sources like a computer's GPU output.

---update (2017...)

BM mini-recorder works flawlessly on a MBP,

through jit.grab.

Thank you all for your thoughts on this.. I have now figured out a solution which doesn't require any additional hardware. So I'll leave the Blackmagic experiment for a later time ;-)
