cello impulse response or other ways to add cello "tone"
I play violin through a MaxMSP system, and have been for about 10 years. I have a great 5 string Zeta plugged in to this and using this system I can get a great electric cello sound via polyphonic pitch shifting. I'd like to be able to add a "natural" acoustic cello resonance model to this. Any ideas on how? Thanks, tbb
do you want to remove additional overtones ,harmonic components from the pitchshifted sound stream ?
edit:
this anyway will not sound natural Sir , the higher notes has different aliquots ! convolution would also sounds different . but this is my guess
edit2:
this is interesting thing , but to model this additively or via fft is a buch of work . you need to know the physical specifics of your instrument ,every octave is different and all that stuff considering forte and piano . personally ive never heard good modelling of acoustic sounds . but i heard interesting substitutions
I do not want to remove anything from the signal, and because the two instruments and the method of exciting the string are so similar, I am wondering if a convolution type system using a cello IR would add resonant frequencies to the simplistic tone that comes from the solid body violin strings via the pickups. The signal I am producing is pretty close to the signal provided by the cello strings. So, if that string signal were to interact with a convolution network that was derived from a cello body, it should give me a sound pretty close to an acoustic cello. At least that is my hope.
allright ! this is the kind of solution , i did not thought about using convolution in real time . BUT u need to consider that your impulse will have different components Bruce . you will still have different COLOR from source comparing to that pitched result . do you know what i mean ? .
if your lower octave has different aliquot (harmonic component) this nature will be processed into the targeted sound . you will not get the right aliquot as it would be if you played higher/lower . but anyway the result might be very interesting
I wish the nbody~ object from the Percolate collection had a cello, but it doesn't. It would be worth trying some of the other models though. Also, the CNMAT resonators~ object has a contrabass model in one of the help files. (It might be in sinusoids~, but it's there.) resonators~ is one of my favorites for adding some sauce to a sound that's a little too dry.
I'll try the resonators~, and maybe even look into the nbody~. It's possible that an acoustic guitar resonance would get close. Anything to get beyond the dry string direct from a bridge piezo pickup sound.
I'm not finding nbody~. Can I get a clue where it might be? Thanks
Got it as part of Percolate. Thanks for the tips. Any real live cello IR's out there?
