Change of window behaviour in Max6?

It used to be that I could click on a button in a window behind (and, obviously, somewhat to the side of) the foremost window and the window arrangement wouldn't change. I find in Max6 that if I do this, the window containing the clicked button jumps to the front, which is not at all what I want to happen!
Is this new behaviour? Is there a setting to revert to the old behaviour?
(Why do this? On most of my programmes, the main patcher usually has a row of buttons on one side to open and close subpatcher windows. There's also an audio on/off button. It used to be that i could (for example) turn audio on or off and nothing else would change. Now what happens is that the window I'm working in goes to the back (ie disappears behind the main patcher window) and I then have to close and reopen that sub patcher window. Which is somewhat annoying!)
