Clippings vs. Snippets?

Brian H.'s icon

What's the difference, other one is accessed with the toolbar and the other with right-click? Is there some different purpose/functionality that means we need them both?

Thanks,
Brian

No, snippets are the new, and better, clippings, so you can consider clippings to be deprecated, but they are still supported at this time. Your personal and package snippets should appear in the Paste From... contextual menu. Clippings don't show up in the patcher browser/toolbar menu because we'd like you to use snippets, although there are technical considerations, as well.

Hey Jeremy. In v6, any folder in the search path named "clippings" would work. This was great for collaborative work. Would you consider reinstating that functionality? Having to save aliases in the snippets things is a bit wonky.

@Wetterberg, I wouldn't get your hopes up about anything related to clippings in Max 7. We did a lot of work to fix some long-standing search path amiguities and misbehaviors in Max 7, and this particular "feature" was apparently a casualty of that effort, we didn't break it on purpose, but I don't believe that it was an intentional feature of Max.

You can use symlinks to packages in the packages folder, though, linking to a dropbox folder or similar. And packages support both clippings and snippets subfolders in Max 7. But really, start using snippets. If there are problems you're experiencing with the snippets workflow, we'd like to hear about them.

thanks man - symlinks are fine, the "packages" folder is the key I think.

Already I predict the snippets browser will be an issue when we're over 100 or so snippets - having categories/subfolders in the empty space to the left would be a great option for me.

But man, is the snippets setup a cool system. Really nice work, guys.

i have this very complex clipping setup on max 6, can i just paste everything as snippets?

(huge system of folders, subfolers)

you can still use the "paste from" thing we used to do, you just need to place an alias or whatever in the right folder.

right now that folder won't show up in the snippets system, but I'm confident that will turn up at some point.

Snippets are placed in the "paste from" thing as well, by the way, so it's essentially the same thing, just with a new and clever front end with integrated naming and such.

@Wetterberg, the empty space on the left of the in-patcher snippets browser represents Collections/Bookmarks containing snippets. Given that you should be able to organize them using Collections or create Bookmarks based on (advanced) search queries and they should show up as 'Categories' on the left side when viewing by name.

yeah, there's a lot of things to learn about the structures inside the new Max, for sure. Collections will be a big thing for me.

So Snippets are working for me using the contextual menu just like Clippings worked but they're not working from the Toolbar. They have circle-slash "no" symbols on them when viewing by Preview and can't be dragged. Also can't be dragged when viewing by Name.

My Snippets are in the folder: user/documents/Max 7/Snippets

Am I doing something wrong?

@stringtapper are you saving your snippets via the Save command? This is a bug in 7.0.0 that this is allowed and has been fixed already for the first update. You need to use the contextual menu "Save Snippet" or the toolbar button to create them from selected objects. Snippets saved via the normal Save dialog don't contain the special snippet sauce. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Yep, that was it. Thanks!
