Command for purging VRAM after closing app or Max?
Hello all and Cycling74
Back with a variant of a VRAM purge problem.
We finally made our application with Max7.0.3 running on Yosemite 10.10.3 and the installation is now on display in an exhibition room
It has 6 displays; 1 control monitor and 5 other 1280 x 720 displays. It’s all running on Max7 64 bit and loading videos
with poly~ object (thanks to Phiol and SPA advices).
We decided to restart the MacPro automatically every night so the VRAM could be purged after quitting Max
because we came to the conclusion that the VRAM kept increasing until crash.
We didn’t see any other way at the time for that.
But it seems (what I can see on remote control and snapshots every 5 min) that the MacPro
doesn’t always keep it’s displays alignment after restart or reboot. And there is no way to save
the display preferences from what I know.
Is there a way to keep the MacPro on 24h/24h without restart and release the VRAM ?
This way my display setup wouldn’t change
A script to the terminal ?
Something ?
Much thanks for your help and advices

So I guess there no answer to my question ?
- On the OSX side there is not "purge VRAM" type of command
- No display alignment "saving option"
- When Max quit, the VRAM is not totally purged (75% only and it needs a restart to release more).
It seems to be a problem with OSX 10.10 that builds up VRAM (what I called a VRAM leak previously).
That is on my point of view a major draw back for installations with more than 2 displays.
hello marie-helene,
how have you connected the 6 displays ?
with DVI, VGA or do you have a mixed setup.
i had a good experience with a 4 monitor setup using 2 DVI and 2 VGA adapters.
(i wanted to avoid the pricy Dual-Link DVI adaptor. with 720p it was ok).
i also would use only original adaptors from apple.
an other solution for you could be connecting your monitors with 2 tripleheads from matrox.
also could be a problem, that your displays all are looking similiar from the os perspective.
you could also try to make them different. using a "Extron EDID 101D " for example.
not very elegant, but sometimes it helps ;-)
good luck with your project !
Hello ABS11
I have a mixed setup
- 1 Control monitor DVI to VGA at a resolution of 1280 x 1024
- 5 other displays DVI to HDMI via Apple Dual-link at a resolution of 1280 x 720
I had tried different setups with a tripleHead2Go also. It didn't respond well for us
with the 6 displays. The one that was the most stable was with the "pricy" Apple Dual-link DVI.
What I found out this morning after testing is that the MacPro gives a different number name
to the displays when it reboots but doesn't change the order of alignment . Which
is a positive answer for me.
It would be better if we could save in the preferences the display alignment.
I would really like to know also if it's possible to purge the VRAM without restarting.
