Controlling max/MSP with a MIDI unit such as Korg Kaoss Pad 2?
Hi!
I have very little knowledge of Max/MSP, I don't even have the programm, yet! So excuse me if this seems like a silly question.
Anyway, I was wondering, as thread title suggest, if I can control Max/MSP with a Korg Kaoss Pad 2? The idea is that the KP's X-Y pad would work as a trigger or a tool to shift X-Y coordinates in programms in real time. The signal would originally come from a guitar equipt with the KP's X-Y Pad, then run through a mixer or an audio-interface, then continue into the computer with MSP and then finally out to my amp. So I'm also wondering if this would work well in a live situation?
Here's some relevant information about the KP2:
Connections:
Input:
LINE IN (stereo RCA phono jack)
PHONO IN (stereo RCA phono jack)
MIC IN (phone jack)
Output:
LINE OUT: Stereo RCA phono jack
Headphones: stereo phone jack (volume control)
Sampling and Converters:
Sampling frequency and time:
44.1 kHz
Up to 6 seconds per key (2 keys total)
AD/DA:
20 bit linear
MIDI Connections:
IN and OUT
I hope there is someone with better experience in Max/MSP that can answer my question!
basically, yes you can.
it has midi in/out, so can be controlled or can control something, you just need to make sure it is plugged to the computer with the midi using a midi interface. you would have to use one of many objects in max that can utilise these actions of midi.
but also, even if it did not have midi, you could do something with the sound, for a volume/frequency to then cause an action.
i am not 100% sure about the complete setup as i dont have kaoss pad to use.
but, yes you can use it with max. the best way to see is to really try it out for yourself with the demo before purchasing.
i would love a kaoss pad myself...
Thanks for the reply. I just found a video on youtube that demonstrated a KP3 controlling Max/MSP, unfortunaly without the guitar element. But it should be no problem!
step 1. get Max/MSP
step 2. load this patch (copy the text and choose File/New From Clipboard):
check out my kaosspad vid:

It appears you're video is private! Thanks for the help!
ooops
thanks for pointing that out
fixed now

Thanks again! That patch is perfect for KP's, well done!
I wonder though, the Kaoss Pad doesn't need to have the MIDI signal returned from the copmuter/MSP to the Kaoss pad right? I mean, since the MIDI Input would already be used for the screen on the guitar?
no, it does not needs it if you dont want it.
you can use the midi in for simple things as returning signals back to reset certain values or lights if you use the computer to edit something.
its all up to you. sometimes having the midi in can help, but it all depends on what you are doing, or what you want...
Alright, I think I've gotten all the answers I was looking for! I appriciate them!
