I've spent a long time developing a granular synth using a gen~ object encapsulated in poly~. When I finally felt like it was ready to start messing around with and using "live"....I realized the patch is way way way too CPU-intensive and causes Max to crash. To figure out what's going on, I'm starting from scratch to see if I can find where the problem is.

I'm finding that even with an extremely simplified gen~ patch, my CPU usage is way too high. Max is reporting it around ~10%, but my Mac's Activity Monitor console is reporting Max using > 50% CPU. 

I've attached an extremely simplified version of my patch if you wouldn't mind taking a look. My full patch has all the parameters one would normally find with a granular synth, but I'm keeping it very simple to try to debug this issue. One question I have: Is this kind of intense CPU usage just inevitable with this configuration, especially since I'm using 100 poly~ instances? If so, is there any way to be able to get the kind of grain density I want (up to 100 grains per second) without killing my computer's CPU?

At this point, I'd even be willing to pay someone (if they consider themselves a performance expert) for a consultation on this, because I feel like I'm a little out of my depth in terms of being able to balance performance with functionality.
