Hello, I'm trying to fit a gen~ regular patch filter into a codebox for a project, but seems to get an issue with the global structure. I certainly could use another filter structure but I'm still frustrated not understanding where the problem is (see patch attached). While the original patch gives a smooth filtered rendering of the input, the codebox versions output an infinitely increasing number. I tried to replicate literally the 'code' section of the original patch, then replace the History with a Delay function, but none works. Any idea?

In the following forum post, I found a Schroeder Reverb written completely in genExpr:

and I saw that the allpass filters and comb filters are described in the following way:

	fc1 = fbcomb(ap3, 0.773, 1687);

I see this kind of approach in all genExpr codes. But can't we write this something similar to this? (ignore vec since it doesn't work in gen dsp apparently, take it as a pseudo-code):

In addition,  array structures are not available on genExpr. Doesn't this create an extreme handicap, how do you all overcome this? 

Sidenote: I also would appreciate if anyone has an online resource for genExpr Syntax. The documentation doesn't seem to cover all the capabilities.

I'm recording into a buffer inside gen~ and reading the content via the counter and peek operators. When I adjust the playback speed, I'm getting a click between the last and the first sample of the buffer, even when I switch back to the playback speed of 1.

I'm using the normalized counter (0-1) to generate a quick fade in at the beginning of the buffer and a quick fade out at the end so you don't hear the click.

Yes I know the concept with the fades. My idea was to realize a circular buffer with the poke/peek operators in gen~. 

But apparently no interpolation is calculated between the last and the first sample within the peek/sample etc. operators. 

What surprises me is the following observation:
If I first read the buffer sample by sample (playback speed 1, no interpolation needed), I get a continuous signal - as expected. 
If I change the playback speed  and go back to 1, I don't get a continuous signal anymore, although I read the buffer sample by sample again. This seems strange to me. I can solve it again by reinstantinate the peek object...

Sometimes porting C code to genexpr is pretty easy -- there's only a handful of gotchas in the differences of the language. But sometimes it is much trickier, if the original code uses constructs that are more difficult to replicate in gen (e.g. arrays of structs). And some parts may need to be in Max, e.g. if there's buffer loading, MIDI, preset loading, etc. 

That repo has a lot of code in it -- and it looks like a lot of that is application level. Isn't that repo an entire DAW?  Looks to me like the port of the MutableInstruments you mention are in this repo: https://github.com/VCVRack/AudibleInstruments 

Note that the original MutableInstruments (https://mutable-instruments.net) are covered by cc-by-sa 3.0 license, so anything derived from it would also need to honor those terms. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ More discussion about what VCV is doing here:

Based on that I'd recommend you contact the Mutable Instruments community first to get the go ahead. Other than that, the actual instruments vary in complexity, some look pretty straightforward to gen-ify, others may be much trickier (e.g. Clouds). 

Olivier' code is a really wonderful gift to the community and worth the dive.  You rarely get to see a full example of production code.

One thing to note is that Olivier's code was designed to run at specific sample rates, so things may sound a little different in VCV if the samplerate is lower than the module's original sample rate.  Any filters in the code with static, hard-coded coefficients would need to be recomp because they would be off in terms of frequency response.    (e.g. 500 Hz occurs at a different angle on the unit circle for 44100 and 96000)

C++ to Gen~

I make music using SuperCollider and code mostly in Python, with a basic knowledge of C++ syntax, so the two of the several things that always pushed me back from Max was having to do simple operations through connecting cables and not being able to define a function.   I think cables get out of control pretty quickly and I don't want to spend time moving things around too much. With the new Max 9 update, I saw that the usage of codebox has been extended, so I thought I would give it a try. My aim is to use either gen or javascript codeboxes as much as I can, to reduce the amount of cables and objects and also because I feel more comfortable with that kind of syntax.

Im new to the gen~ environment and currently trying to create a sequencer with a buffer and gen~ and I am running into a problem I cant seem to figure out. After having created a buffer, specified its sample size and distributed values of 1 ("events") evenly across it, I get uneven (some 209ms others 290ms) impulses reading it with gen~.

Once when I opened the patch, the impulses were even until I opened the gen~. I was unable to reproduce this though, now I always get uneven values.

I´ve tried the same patch on a different computer, where it seemed to work. Does my problem reproduce on your computer?

Im wondering if it is a CPU related issue but generally, im puzzled. 

My initial thought was that using gen~ for sequencing will give me more precision than ticks for example, but maybe its too computation heavy?

 patcher can be enabled/disabled with the message "enable $1", but I can't see that it's documented. I found some forum posts about this behavior for MSP objects in general (or maybe all objects, I'm  not sure), and that it's undocumented.

I assume many here know about it, but the reason I'm posting is because I found it while working through a
