Creating smaller audio files or Mp3 in Max/MSP
Hi,
A little off topic of max/msp but I'm trying to convert some sound files into the smallest possible to be used with max/msp.
The best compression format seems to be Mp3 although it won't allow me to open this file type up in MP3. Only Wav.!! Is it possible to open mp3? or could I covert the Mp3 back into a Wav after and keep the file size?
Any Ideas? I don't want to mess with the sample rate too much and doesn't do that much good!.
I've got a deadline very soon so any help would be greatly apprieated since hardly anyone seems to help on here. lol
Cheers, Carl
P.s. I've attached a wav file which shouldnt need more then 10kb in therory!
Buffer~ and sfplay~ read lots of formats. Given you WAV fixation one would guess you're on Windows.
1) Why don't you tell us this instead of making us guess?
2) You can open MPEG files with buffer~, but there is fineprint to read in the MSP reference manual. Look at page 75, particularly the paragraph including the sentence "If you are using Max on Windows..."
Yes, I am using windows. When opening a file with the buffer the only files you can open are wav, snd, aif, aiff!
and Mpeg would not help my situation of trying to get the AUDIO files down to a minimum size! cheers anyways
With patience and RAM, you can import Mp3 files to buffer~ with the import message.
You can try this too (a look at Max Objects Database is one of the time a good starting point when you search something) http://www.maxobjects.com/?v=objects&id_objet=3530&requested=MP3&operateur=AND&id_plateforme=0
Forget about the second idea, it's an Mp3 Encoder and not a Decoder.

.mp3 is short for MPEG 1 layer 3
thanks Bertrand,
Sorry, I am new to max/msp! what do you mean the import message?
Also, i've looked for mp3 encoders, but can't seem to find any. i'll keep trying tho.
Im gonna downsample them a little but converting into a smaller format like mp3 would be perfect if its possible
cheers lads
But this method needs to be very patient...
