I'm on Windows. With Max standalone I can use Ctrl + mouse wheel to zoom in/out a patcher, but I can't make it work within the patcher editor launched from Ableton. 

Is is expected and, in case, is there a preference to active this (very useful to me!) behaviour?

I just learned this same thing - even stranger if you have a sub-patcher you can mouse zoom in that window, but not the main window!
