Dalek voice simulator
I recently stumbled on how this was done in Doctor Who, and I thought it would be fun to give people a chance to guess how to make it before sharing a patch... :)
here is the first instance:
oh, and this was the first dalek sighting; WARNING: not for the faint of heart.
Haha, VERY phallic! I'm just old enough to have a vague childhood memory of being scared witless by Patrick Troughton and the Daleks. Anyone rising to Ernest's challenge?
Brendan
it's a delay which time is modulated with a sinewave ?
ring modulation
Great links here, to check verisimilitude ;)
spring reverb & 4 bit digital sampling
Brendan is right, although sadly he looked it up, which is cheating.
Also it needs a relay to flash the ear lights when the dalek is talking. This turned out to be necessary when more than one dalek is on the screen, as they do not have mouths, and yes that was a new too at the time, which shows how old this is.
if he cheated, shouldn't he be... exterminated?
LOLZ
although "technically", I have a long memory and the topic of voice ring modulation has cropped up here before ;) I was going to post a patch but I didn't want the thread to be "wiped out", "obliterated" or . . .
'Nicer' distortion?
[edit] plus 'radio frequency inversion' ring mod
that's pretty good! There should actually be a variable parametric eq boosting 1-4khz on the input. It improives the voice serration. I think clipping is a good approximation, but maybe there are better models.
Indeed. Let's see who improves it ;) Or even reads and interprets the circuit diagrams in the "code" pdf link posted above.
Here is an .obj file of a dalek for visualization too )
