Decision: MSP vs. Sony Soundforge

hello,

i am new to this board and i have a very basic question:
will cover msp the following problems:

i want to automize the workflow of cutting, analyzing and processing (normalizing) a lot of audiofiles.
the first part, the cutting/fading/inserting-silence can be well done in Sony Soundforge with batchprocessing and scripting. but its not possible to analyze the RMS of an audiofile and then mix another audiofile BASED ON THE ANALIZED RMS-VALUE to the first file.
Is that possible with msp and will msp do the job of cutting/fading/inserting-silence too? (because i don't want/can't to buy soundforge AND msp!)
I fancy MaxMSP and i prefer it to Soundforge ...

thanks a lot,
adam

What you want to do is very well possible in Max/MSP, but!!!

I am very experiencend in creating such sort of processes.
I would only do it if it would be an ongoing necessity.
The time to program it would be an amount close to processing a lot of
sound files by hand!

You need to learn Max/MSP which is fun, but needs a lot of effort/time.
If its just the above mentioned purpose, it would be faster for you to
do it by hand till Sony (unlikely) will listen to your requests to
include this functionality within the batch processing of soundforge.

I still would like to recommend you to get into Max/MSP, and I am sure
you'll soon realise that the potential of that beast exceeds a tool like
soundforge by far. But to the expense of a steep learning curve. Its a
programming environment and not a ready to use audio tool...
And most things you can easily do in soundforge you would rather do in
Audacity which is free, as long those ready to go tools provide what you
need... (Which they seem not...)

Another possibility would be to hire a knowledgable Max programmer to
create it for you, this might be cheaper than buying Soundforge or
Max/MSP. (especially if its somthing valuable for others as well).
It is easily possible to create Max patches which run in the free MaxPlay.
But then you would miss the fun of DIY with Max...
It's hard to express what you would miss if you have no experience in
creative tool creation. I can just say its much more than well worth it...

Or...you could go and download Audacity, (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/), which is free to do all your audio trimming, processing etc etc...and buy Max/MSP to do lots of crazy fun stuff.

I can't remember if Audacity supports batch processing or not, but i don't think you'll be able to script your commands, but as it's free it's got to be worth a try.

You could use Audacity and a bit of effort, (ie by hand), until you get your head around Max/MSP, and when you're a bit of a guru, (ala Stefan), then you'll be able to create a patch to do it all for you.

Personally when it comes to doing the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and and over....and over again, i become quite good at it. It must have something to do with me being a bit of an automaton at heart!

I'd like to try thinking out of the box a bit more but i can't remember where i left it ;0)

Or he can buy Sound Forge and use pD, why not...

Assuming you're on Windows, working on sound, i must tell you that Sound
Forge is the editor you'll need for almost everything thousand times a
days. You canno't live without. I can't. Audacity is free, sure, but
it's also ugly and unperfect; just like pD (why do all the free stuff
have to be ugly ?) I guess you'll need SF & MAx both, so... choose the
right order and save money.

Audition (ex-CoolEdit) is also nice for batch processing.
