discarding data sent to coll, when new data is inserted

Im using a coll for storage on a system where a user selects something and then information gets stored in the coll based on their selection. When the select something new, the coll is cleared. Sometimes the data can be quite big and by the time the data has been inserted into coll, the user has gone on to select something else, which slows down the patch.
Im wondering if there is any smart way of discarding the previously selected data and instead inserting the new data? Is there a system that people have used before, as this problem might be fairly common?

i believe that you can optimize the patch in a way.
do you, for example, use hundreds of numberboxes when formatting the data or something like that?
