DMX output
hi this is my first post in these forums,
i am trying to get dmx data out of max using the chamsys MagicDMX dongle, initially the data will be going into robe 170's and chroma LED pannels, I am running MAX 6 and OSX 10.5.8
I've had a look around cant find any posts on this already so if i have missed anything please point me in the right direction. I am well aware that there are many options to use EntTec products and various externals as well as the artnet.
Eventually i will probably update to artnet however i have been using chamsys a while and as i have the MagicDMX so i was going to try this first. I am more experienced in chamsys and avolite that max msp although i do have a fair bit of experience on max.
I have come across Imp.dmx by David Butler but cant exactly get my head around it also i have seen OLA and cant exactly see how i can incorporate this into my system. Also i was wondering if i could somehow use the dmx usb pro external object
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and please tell me if i completely barking up the wrong tree
much appreciated, thanks
As far as I know you can't use the MagicDMX dongle with anything but MagicQ. Therefore the only way you can use this to output DMX from Max is to send ArtNet from Max to MagicQ, and then set up MagicQ to copy incoming data to the MagicDMX dongle output.
OLA doesn't support MagicDMX either. There is an object for sending data from Max to OLA but it's quite old and doesn't work in the newest versions of Max. I may get around to updating it at some point...
thanks for your very quick response, unfortunately i thought this may be the case, i am doing a small gig today so i will ask around the tech managers and see if they have any suggestions.
That is a great suggestions that i hadn't even considered. I will definitely be able to try your suggestion and let you know if i have any luck. As this seems the most sensible solution until i get my hands on an alternative
i was also thinking maybe there is a way to rewire on one machine so that i am running MagicQ and max on the same machine with the output of max routed to magic Q internally. but i think i would have problems with latency if this were even possible.
Thanks again for your advice
This is very much possible, you just use unicast Art-Net from Max to the local loopback address 127.0.0.1. There should be no problems with latency as the signal is never routed onto the local network.
Hai. This is really nice. Thanks for your information
