Is there a windows version?
am i correct in assuming that it's not going to be possible to either get windows versions or source?
Releasing the sources isn't in the works although that's an interesting idea. Thanks for mentioning it. We need to make a bit more money before we can consider that kind of fun. No promises but there is talk of a windows version in the future.
many thanks for making this available for free!
very nice! :))

Currently, no.
Since this has been the No. 1 most FAQ, let me add a few words.
Anyone out there thinking that producing a Windows version would be no more than building a Visual Studio project and hitting F7 simply has no idea of what is really involved. If it were that easy to do, believe me, we would have had a Windows version out long ago.
Consider that it took approximately 17 years from the first prototype of Max before there was a functioning Windows Golden Master. We won't take an as long as that, but in order to get iCE to do what it does, including an extensive amount of OS-dependent code was an inescapable necessity. Porting that code to run on Windows is a far, far more extensive project than most people imagine.
I have ported over 100 Max/MSP/Jitter external objects from Mac OS to Windows. It's a fair bet that I know what I'm talking about in this department.
Keep the faith and it will come. In the meantime, you might want to borrow your significant other's iMac to try out iCE.-)
Best,
Peter
thanks for all the hard work and for making it free, i was interested by ICE a while ago, but havent chased it up...
now i have no excuse!
:)
Aack! I wanted to use iCE for the sequencing foundation of my patch, but it doesn't seem to be working in Max 5. Is this true, or is there something wrong with my system? If it is broken in Max 5, are there any plans to make it compatible?
thanks,
J.
Cycling '74 made it clear, from the first announcement of Max 5 onwards, that UI objects (like ice.lattice) from Max 4.0 would not be compatible with Max 5. Period.
Lattice is going to need a complete re-write, and the new SDK--without which nobody can do anything--is still not available.
At this point in time I can only reiterate Cycling '74's stated policy on Pluggo: if Pluggo (or iCE) is essential to your work, you'll need to stay with Max 4.
Sorry, we're no happier about the situation than anybody else. But until the SDK is available there is nothing we can do.
The silver-lining is that the new SDK will, by all indications, go a long way to help us to make iCE cross-platform savvy. But it will only take us part of the way.
Thanks, Peter.
Well, fortunately, it's not too big a deal for my app to stay in Max 4.6. I'm not using any of the new features, at this point, so I can easily wait.
cheers,
J.
Hello! All links for download is dead :-( Could anyone send me the iCE 1.2? Thanks in advance!
I reached out to Peter Castine (developer of iCE externals) and he told me that OS X has broken ice for quite a few years due to security concerns.
So even if we could get our hands on this, the objects wouldn't work. Additionally, they were made for Max 4.5, I think.
Some clarification is in order.
It was specifically ice.key that Glen had asked me about, and it was specifically this object that was broken by OS X. (Allowing a background app to capture foreground keystrokes is pretty clearly a security concern. Back in OS 8 days life was more innocent.)
Then there's ice.lattice, that was broken by the SDK changes to UI objects that came with Max 5. That was going to require a massive rewrite, and lattice was in need of a serious rethink anyway. Lattice has always had more features than were good for it.
I think the other iCE objects might have still worked through Max 5 and into Max 6. I seriously doubt that anything is left that would work on either Max 7 or M4L. The latter seems to be what all the kids are using, anyway.
Hi, I had installed your demo version a while ago to try it and deleted it to reinstall the DL link file. Now i'm told that the demo period is over and the soft quits right after clicking on demo mode. Is there anything I can do ?
Hi, I'm still using the MaxMSP 4.5 on my Powerbook G4 OSX 10.4 and looking for free iCE tools yet. Could anyone help me please?
Thanks in adavance!
Patrick, thank you sooooo much for link! This is UB version and not PPC. I have Powerbook G4 PPC with MaxMSP 4.5, may be anyone have PPC version too, please...
