Editing m4l devices outside live -- buffer~ issue when no initial length

I realized that a buffer~ initiated without a length can not be accessed by functions anymore. At least on my two machines, both os 10.6, max 6.1.3 See:
buffer doesnotwork is epmty here, buffer works is initialzed correctly.
I can change my buffer objects in max (opening them up with audi off) and add an inital lenght, but live instantly crashes when loading a device using this method (I use it a lot for windowing).
So here is the Question: Any idea how to change my m4l patches meanwhile without opening them in live? Turning Audio off in m4l still crashes too. Filed a report already but need to be able to use these m4l devices by tomorrow....
    Thanks, J

Hi, i ran into a similar problem yesterday with buffer and wave. there was a bug introduced in max 6.1.3. i contacted support and got an incremental update for the wave object within a few hours. as it is weekend i can see possible workarounds. if you still have live 8 and max 6.0.8 installed open your devce in live 8 to edit it. otherwise downgrade to max 6.1.2. i have a mac version of it and could forward it to. right now i am not at my laptop but i will be in about one hour. jan
