Enable and disable a midi input to Ableton using Max?

I'd like to make a device available during a live set and then have Ableton not see it at all for rest of the time.
The obvious solution is to simply open the preferences window, then tick and untick the device, but in the long term I'd like to automate the enabling and disabling of the MIDI port.

Is this possible? If so, which objects should I look into?
Is there any potential issue with making a MIDI device appear and disappear during playback? I guess it might appear to Live like I'm hot-plugging a device?

I might end up doing this in Bome, but I just figured it would be nice to be self-contained in Ableton and M4L.
