I encountered and error 126 on Windows issue with

 64 bit and thanks to some input from Volker Böhm on Github I was able to resolve it.

I thought I'd make a dedicated post about it, since it seems like I might be a common issue with older externals.

Apparently error 126 usually occurs when the external cannot find a dll it needs.

On windows, Sigmund~ 64bit, and apparently bonk~, and possibly some others require the 2013 version of the C++ Redistributable. The latest version of the redistributable does not work. But after downloading and installing the 2013 version all was swell for me.
