I'd rather not freeze my M4L devices when exporting them - I'd like to just be able to press a button, get and AMXD to share, and carry on tweaking.

It looks like I should be able to use the 'Export as Max for Live Device', but it's greyed out. From other forum posts, it looks like a) setting a file to open on load is helpful (but I don't seem to have that option - the AMXD is already set to load on open, and bold, or b) having it in a project is helpful - but it seems to have a blank project created in ~/Documents/Max 8/<device name>, and I can't do anything useful for that.

FWIW, here's my project window and project inspector:

(I don't want to freeze because a process that may leave old copies of files strewn around the hard drive seems like a terrible idea when you just want to package up the stuff that's already there...)
