If I send a message like "set 2 2" to an expr object making a simple sum, and then I send a bang to the same expr, I would expect it to output 4. At least that's what I understood from reading the reference page. However, that's not what happens (see example): expr seems to ignore the set message.

Is this a bug, or am I missing something?

Yeah, you're right. The "set" message doesn't seem to replace the variables as this example shows.

set message doesn't update the variables.

it just does not not work on inlets other than the first, as you could do with list, pak, sprintf, you name it.

though it somehow does not even make sense that "set 2 3" works on inlet #4 of [list], because "2 3" without "set" would do exactly the same.

for "list" to [expr] this is correctly documented (in Max v7.x)...

Weird... I made the exact same patch as your first example and it didn't work (I use Windows 10).

When I bang the expr, I get 2 as a result.

tried max 8 in win 10 and still works for me. :/
