external control problem with Max for Live

I have searched through this forum and do not see a similar problem, which makes me suspect I'm missing something elementary.

I'm attempting to use a Behringer BCR2000 to control parameters of a jitter patch. The patch works fine with the mouse, and midi certainly gets in from the BCR2000. But all incoming data from the BCR is registering as being on MIDI channel 1.

For example, the patch is in a midi channel in Live; the patch contains a ctlin object; when I turn a BCR knob that is sending on channel 5, ctlin receives the data and accurately passes on the controller number and control values into the program. But ctlin is showing that it is receiving this data on MIDI channel 1. If I force ctlin to only look at channel 5 it sees nothing.

I am baffled.
