Falling text symbols, need help

Miguel Mesa's icon

Hi! I'm on a project and I need to make a patch that shows a kind of rain of letters, falling. Not as fast as "the Matrix" film.

I've been working with jit.gl.text2d but my concern is the speed... it seems to be a slow procedure. And the falling efect I programmed isn't working.

My idea is to have a 3 plane matrix, the first plane is for the letter, second and third for X,Y coordinates. In order to achieve the falling efect I used a jit.expr object but it doesn't seem to work.

Here is the patch, any suggestion?

Thanks in advance!

How about this? This probably isn't the best way to do it, but it's a quick fix.

Yeah, the jit.slide is a nice touch.

Thanks Zachary and Matthieu. I was stuck and your suggestions were really helpful!

looks like you've got some nice suggestions.
however, if you need some more inspiration, i would also suggest taking a look at the jitter particle generators and creating a particle system to generate position values for your letters.

Hello,

you had a small but nasty bug in your jit.expr: instead of accesing
separate planes of matrix incoming through inlet 0(in[0].p[0]), you
were using whole matrices incoming into inlets 0 1 2(in[0]).

Another catch is to use float values for char matrices too, meaning
that char values are 0-1. instead of 0-255.

To gain some speed, get rid of pwindows.

You can also add modulo operator to jit.expr, so that the y
coordinate remains in given range(% 1. means that when the values
passes 1. it snaps back to 0.)

Here's your patch changed a bit:

Copy patch and select New From Clipboard in Max.

I enjoyed them quite a bit and would like to use them for certain shows. I assume there are issues with updating software from ppc to intel 1.5-->1.6, but i have waited almost a year.

how do/did others update their externals so rapidly

some people have more spare time than others. seriously, when you're
a one-man shop and trying to make a living, doing software
development can be a time-consuming and unprofitable enterprise. and
we'd probably complain if we had to pay for the upgrade.... ;-) fwiw,
i would love to have a UB version of AUVI, but i don't think it's
going to happen any time soon.

I don't know him personally, but there should at least be a note on the webpage. My intention was not to embarrass Kurt, but to simply find out if the money i spent was going to be honored with an update.

Ive actually spoken with Kurt a few times recently pleading with him
to make a 1.6 UB. As Bruce has said, teaching + baby + life gets in
the way.

Ive tried to convince Kurt to create a set of Image Unit plugins -
this would expand the market for AUVI, (Quartz Composer, Modul8,
VDMX, etc), plus GPU accelerate it.

Its a shame, I agree, to lose AUVI on the newer systems, but most of
the functionality can be rebuilt in shaders, and be much much faster.

Well, honestly, the reason ive been teaching myself shaders and
releasing them is to re-create the AUVI stuff ive lost since
transitioning to 1.6/Intel Mac. :)

Btw, if you're on PPC, you can use third party CFM jitter externals,
if you have CFM support enabled, and have installed jitlib 1.5.3 in /
Library/CFMSupport, but this won't help you if you're on MacTel.
