Fixing a "quick record" file
Hello everyone.
About ten minutes ago, I completed the coolest jam yet with my Max instrument- things are finally starting to sound "as intended".
Fortunately, I had been recording everything using the quick record patch.
Unfortunately, when I hit "stop" on Quick Record, Max froze, and I had to restart.
Now I have an Aiff file with a 62Mb file size, but a file length of zero- obviously it couldn't close the file. I have tried opening it in Soundhack, Audacity, etc.- no worky.
Any suggestions on how to recover this jam? Let me know.....
All the best, Jeremy

You may have a chance with the openraw message for sfplay~ (look
inside the "raw_data_and_force_header" subpatcher in "new features"
subpatcher of sfplay~ help file).

If Classic is still an option for you, there's a
little app called something like 'fix aiff' or 'repair
aiff' that I've managed to succesfully resurect
corrupted files with in the past. Can't find the url
right now, but if i do, I'll post it,
cheers

Thank you! I will try both of these solutions-
hopefully the jam is as cool as I remember, but either way I will learn how to fix this in the future :)
Cheers and thanks again, Jeremy

Soundhack can also open any file. Then just set the header with header
change and save...
Always worked for me...
If anything is recorded into these 62 MB it will show up...
If its as good as you remember, share it... ;-)

Hey - when I use quick record and specify a location to record to
(ie. desktop) it always ends up as a file length of zero for some
reason, however, there is always another file automatically written
to my max/msp folder that's named 'quickie' followed by the time of
day and date. Check yr max/msp folder and I bet you'll find your file.
(it will look like this: quickie.2005.9.20.10.41.30.aif)

Hmm...
Still struggling with this one.
David- yeah, I grabbed it from the MaxMSP folder, where it saved the file.
Cheers, Stefan, I tried forcing a header change in Soundhack, but no avail- it shows up as 0MB in soundhack, despite being 62MB on the desktop....
I tried "open raw" in SFplay~ as well...no avail.
And thank you Roger, though it is a 24 bit AIFF file I'm working with, unfortunately.
I may have to resign myself to a lost cause, and remember it as the best thing I've ever done :)
Thanks for all you help, and certainly will post the file (and my solution), even if the jam turns out to be boring :)
Cheers, Jeremy
Jeremy, post the .zipped file to one of those free online storage
places, I'd be happy to take a shot at it...

Did you try openraw in one word? As demonstrated in the help file (in
the "new features" subpatcher -> "raw_data_and_force_header"
subpatcher). It's worth a try.

You have to open it with "open any", then change the header...
Normal opening can't work, as a valid header deosn't exist yet...

Firstly, thank you again to everyone who sent suggestions-
What eventually worked was using the "open any" function in Soundhack and forcing the header to 24 bit stereo-
worked perfectly!
As promised, here is the jam- I uploaded it to Sendspace, I couldn't squish it down enough to upload it here....
It is, as remembered, very cool (for a live spot anyway). Made entirely from a water bottle, a wooden flute, a bag of crisps, and MaxMSP!
Enjoy!
Cheers, Jeremy
