I am fairly certain that I read somewhere while downloading 1.7.7 the other day that it requires 10.4 or higher. I can't remember exactly where I saw it, but it was in there somewhere.

Make sure you have the right ftm version for the right max version. - FTM version 1.7.7b is for Max 4.6 ( FTM.1.7.7b-Max46ppc.dmg or FTM. 1.7.7b-Max46macintel.dmg) - FTM version 1.7.7 is for Max 4.5 ( FTM.1.7.7-Max45ppc.dmg ) - Windows version FTM.1.7.7.BETA.exe is beta.
On a mac, java version "1.5.0_06" is the one you normally have with OSX 10.4.8. FTM.1.7.7 worked fine for me with Max 4.5.7 and OSX 10.4.8.
ps : I'm not a ftm programmer, just a user as much as any other max library. When changing ftm version, I just replace the whole ftm folder declared in my preference files and run FTMInit.command.
      good luck,

I forgot one detail : When changing ftm version, I just replace the whole ftm folder declared in my preference files, run FTMInit.command and copy _FTM_.pat in the max-startup folder.

My system: MacBook pro intel w/ tiger 10.4.8 maxmsp 4.6.2, ftm 1.7.8
I had the same problem with the java-based GUI stuff.
After downloading and mounting the dmg:
Follow the instructions in the README.
Copy ftmjava.jar from the java folder in the FTM folder that you downloaded to the folder "/Cycling74/java/lib/" in your max folder. (You should also see max.jar (and jitter.jar) there.)
This last step is critical for getting your ftm gui windows to open (where applicable) without crashing max, although ftm itself will otherwise work just fine.
Hope this helps at least the mac intel folks.

I am struggling with installation using a similar set up(MacBook Pro, OS X 10.4.8, Max/MSP/Jitter 4.6.1). I've followed the instructions in the readme(MacIntel ftm 1.7.8) and in the previous post, but when I launch an ftm patch(i.e. FTM.tutorial.1-7), I get several error messages:
error: #T: no such object error: ftm.mess: No such object
      Can anyone advise?

It's worth checking the FTM wiki
Also, copy the Frameworks folder ( FTMLib.frameworks) to
I was on 10.3.9 (It might be to do with that that this was necessary)
Good question about Gabor - any answers on that?
