hello everyone again. I'm thinking about buying Max + gen add on, is it possible to use gen to develop the following?
    - ocr - text to speech - speech recognition - ascii art - raster trace to vector
    thanks in advance

why don't you try the demo? or "search" the forum?

because I already did a search and found nothing, the demo period is too short to have an idea. if this crap if the kind of community I'm going to join, maybe I'm better looking something else

      thanks for calling me-taking-the-time-to-reply crap.
The max community is one of most friendly communities I know of. Lots of knowledge lingers here. You just have to ask the right questions. And ad relevant information (e.g. you searched and couldn't find anything) It's a mystery to me how you could have searched the forum and couldn't find the info you wanted.
Why do you want to use gen to do all this?

that were obviously not targeted at individuals, just an average of replyes i got. thanks for your time and your links, i wish to use gen because i would need those externals and i guess gen is my silver bullet.

maybe WE are better if you DO look at something else as that attitude doesn't sit well with a lot of people in these I'm sure you have already noticed. Anyway if you do join you will be most welcome just be careful with your language not to put people off helping you and give as much and as clear as possible information on what you need help with.
Despite that I think that most of those things would be possible but some would require a large amount of effort and a thorough investment of time into learning MAX and gen also (gen is more similar to coding than MAX). Someone who knows more about these things will hopefully be able to guide you into what you might need to do. Other than that I would still get the demo and try it out first.
EDIT: beaten to the rest of my post by the above

No problem and welcome. I look forward to seeing what you get up to.
which book did you get? 'Electronic Music and Sound Design' is particularly excellent but it mainly/exclusively deals with audio in MAX.
