Granular Synthesis Instrument External

Hi there!

I'm currently in the midst of research to create a Granular Synthesis Max external for my final year University project. I'm trying to make this external as innovative as possible to make it actually worthwhile and usable once my project is done. I find Granular Synthesis itself fascinationg. I'm looking for as many suggestions as possible and general ideas any of you guys might have in which to include that you would like to see in a Granular Synthesis instrument. Any comments or suggestions are welcome, I'm just trying get some opinions on what a people think of a Granular Synthesis Instrument from as many different educated perspectives as possible.

Cheers,
Johnathan

Well I expect you've looked at the Robert Henke's Granulator for Max? I think that sounds great, though as someone using it for sound design (in a sfx creation sense), I'd prefer to have more control over the parameters using envelopes. In fact I'd like to be able to envelope/lfo everything in the style Absynth uses.

Hi
I posed a very similar question recently, and the inconclusive responses suggest that we are free to devise and modulate parameters in any way that suits the practical and artistic contexts. Are you doing 'live' sampling, file playback or a hybrid?

Personally, I got much inspiration from Monolake, SugarSynth, grainstretch, Sakonda and Bencina. I decorrelate grain pitch from size, provide interonset control and modulate other parameters, as Mark recommends, using a variety of envelope or LFO sources.

Oooh, and if you can find MachineSleet on youtube, he has some cool ideas on granular playback

multi-stream real time granulation (short buffer) rather than file-based (long buffer) is, i think a "gap in the market" good luck!

+1 for real-timish input granular synthesis !

. . . . you could call it "grainstream" : )

Maybe also look at borderlands on the Ipad for interesting ideas in granular visualisation and interface.

A "proper" granular synth that can stream in a live realtime input would be the killer app, for sure.

The closest I've seen is "Grainfreeze" by Robert Henke, but it still doesn't have the poly pitched-midi thing going on.

(damn wordpress)

When this PhD is FINALLY over, I promise to build one of these. Following some in-depth gen~ research though.

The race is on . . . .

Hurray, i say =-)

Curtis Roads' book, MicroSound, is also a good resource here. It's all about granular.
