Guitar through Max/MSP patch(es)

finlay's icon

I know, I know, this question has been asked before! But reading through these posts there has never really been a definitive answer?
I would very much appreciate any help here, my situation is -

- Electric guitar plugged into my Mac via USB (tested and working).
-'maxpat' patches downloaded which would be great to play the guitar through.
- I have also downloaded Soundflower.

I am VERY new to this program so simpple but straightforward help would be appreciated.
Any questions about my system/anything at all I can answer of course!

Thank you

Already looked at that, can't get any sound from it! Thanks though

Say I had a midi keyboard plugged in via USB - how would I configure the I/O so I can get any sound from it?

finlay's icon

Not a silly question, I hadn't! I have downloaded this patch - how do I install the nw.gverb~ external?

Checked and the 'CoreAudio' driver is showing up

(Sorry if it's painful helping me)

Done -

Yes it has worked with Logic, Ableton, Reason (using a MIDI keyboard), Garageband and Audacity

(I haven't bought all this, mostly free trials testing them out)

Also -

For one patch, I click the microphone button and my USB guitar jack starts flashing (so it's working!) but the two level meters do not move?

Let this be a simple starting point. All it does is take audio in, pass it through a vst~ of your choice (pick a reverb or delay or something that you use in your DAW) and then passes the audio out. Guitar into USB interface and wearing headphones (or going through speakers) is all you need. Click the PLUG button to choose a different VST. Click the OPEN button to OPEN the current VST. Pre-configured to work with EOS reverb by Audio Damage but that's just me :-)

Max Patch
Copy patch and select New From Clipboard in Max.

You can patch multiple VSTs in a row if you like, split your signal, merge it back together, etc. The sky is the limit.

@DEvo - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP18 is what I can find, sorry.

@earsmack - Which PLUG button? And how do I use this patch you've uploaded..?

I feel like such an idiot! But once I get this sorted I can use patches for so many other instruments :)

Hi finlay
I think DEvo is referring to your external USB soundcard. Ensure that this device is selected under Options/DSP Status/Driver, and Input/Output Device, then select the Input from I/O Mappings that corresponds to the guitar input.

Copy all the text below from -----begin_max5_patcher----- up to and including end_max5_patcher, it's self-explanatory:

Then it might be time to familiarise yourself with the MSP tutorials which come with this program.

@DEvo - a Lightsnake -

Yes, agreed.. I probably shouldn't have dived into it straight away!

Thanks very much for your help :)

@Brendan - Thank you very much, I'll give it a go!

I was hoping it would all be rather straightforward but I do need to just set some time and learn the basics -

Thanks all :)

When you paste my patch into a Max window you will see two buttons: plug and open. Those are the buttons I'm referring to. Good luck!

Thanks managed to get the text pasted and working, it's definitely just the I/O that has messed up, I created a really simple machine that just makes a 'booop' noise depending on how high/low the number is and no sound! I'll work on it it later,

Thanks everyone :)
