harsh noise- who makes it here?

Dario's icon

Anybody in here make Harsh Noise music? I might be fun to compare notes :)

foldh's icon

Well it's not all that harsh but I do make noise... My solo project is Foldhead and I am also in Early Hominids (with Neil Campbell) and Inverted Nepal (with Pete Cann)

Some examples...

Foldhead

Homz

Inverted Nepal

I'd be interested to hear some of your stuff so feel free to send me a link!

Cheers

Very nice sounds!

I guess what I am more interested in is what your patches techniques are.

Anybody wanna post some examples of what they are using?

heres some performance and youtube vids:

Here is an example of what I am using.

Max Patch
Copy patch and select New From Clipboard in Max.

Had to optimize this for the forum and in the process the presets got messed up but its still pretty good anyway.

Nice work Dror!

Sounds great - the patch is good too. I'll dig around and post one of mine. Most of what I posted is done using analog gear going into MAX rather than generating the sounds in there.

those following this thread might be interested in Akihiko Matsumoto's Merzbow style patch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7QY4_hkP-w there is more interesting & cool patches he has done on his site http://akihikomatsumoto.com/maxmsp/ which is all in Japanese, so if you do not speak/read the language you can always use a translater website to figure out the text. Enjoy!

I'm not really a noise musician but here's Crushed Up Babies circa 2009
Seasoned max users will get a serious laugh out of the insides of this patch.

-Matt

EDIT: and I take no responsibility if it crashes max. (It's pretty hardcore.)

Yes Mr Banshee I am very familiar with Akihiko Matsumoto’s work. It is excellent. I especially like his Merzbow patch.

Audio Matt, I couldnt get your patch to work too well. Max couldnt find "crushed up babies" controller, mat.normalize. And also seems like some things werent connected in the "cub" subpatch so I connected them. After that all I got was a big pulsing bass sound.

I am intersting in Matsumoto´s Merzbow patch, but could not find a download on his website.
Is it a public patch ?

test? lol why can't i add patches? ahh ok code and pre were breaking it.

a ways back someone on the forum helpfully showed me how to make the gen computed sine example more noisy. thanks again. :) added feedback, made a bunch of presets... got bored and hooked up some counters and metros. :) click on presets while int boxes are selected and arrow up down, hit spacebar etc.

+ another gen patcher i made next day using similar idea , most of the fun sounds are in scrubbing or automating controls...

for either i like running 6+ at once. :) although tbh in use i do stuff like resample and play stuff like uhh chords ,run through reverb and eq to prettify etc so maybe not so harsh noise. i enjoy the textures and synthesis methods of noise though!

Thanks, found it!

Jonah, stoked to check out your code at some point this week when I am not swamped at work :)

@ jonah Love the patch!

Max Patch
Copy patch and select New From Clipboard in Max.

here's another patch of mine..
it uses "waveshaping feedback" in addition to fm feedback, and some granular type stuff. can make harsh sounds but also some stuff reminiscent of tape stop/analog warping sounds

I just wanted to say these patches are great; I used to make Harsh Noise the old fashion way with effect pedals and feedback loops, but I've used Max primarily for visuals and sound spatialization. Fun patches, now I want to make some noise patches of my own! Thanks for the inspiration.

Hey guys !
How are you?

Can anyone help me make this patch work on mac OS ventura 13.0 ?
The harsh noise patch from http://akihikomatsumoto.com/maxmsp/merzbow.html

I already tried to install an older max version but it is not compatible... i might need

thank you

Source Audio's icon

you will have to download percolate package, gen24.mxo is used in that patch.

few other externals are not usable : pp & plugconfig are parts of max 5

and few abstractions from the past, mostly part of jimmies.

I placed jimmies abstractions usable in max 8 in the folder,

but you could replace them with plain max objects once you get what they do.

.....................................

abstraction "Marshall"

you can delete pp and plugconfig

but

buffer~: PlexiJumped.wav: can't open

that is Impules response file that should be loaded.

you will have to edit that Marshall abstraction, insert own IR file etc

I just checked mxf file,

that wave file was embedded.
