Nömak made a song several years ago called Chrystaline with a really interesting sound effect in there (https://youtu.be/w4UqeP__DYc?t=47). In an AMA on reddit last year, he revealed how do create this sound after someone asked about it when it was used on a Charli XCX song (https://youtu.be/0MdcGiBdTOg?t=19). However, he explained it mostly using Layman's terms and didn't go into detail (comment: https://old.reddit.com/r/xcxheads/comments/da5r0s/im_n%C3%B6mak_one_the_producers_behind_click_gone/f1ng7sg/). I have used spectral synthesis before, but have never been able to achieve this metallic effect by supposedly "smearing" the frequencies. Is he talking about using a fast fourier transform? How can I do this?

(use the 'polar' version of the patch there, it's more complete in its implementation... the cartesian was just to go through the math.... you might also want to replace the inlets with signal-inlets so that you can gate-off/change the sound as quickly as in that video)

Pump up the "overall volume of delayed bin amplitudes" parameter to 8.

Then keeping the "per-bin amplitude feedback" around 0.95(this parameter is like a 'length of smear'), play around with the other params(the amp gate-threshold lets more of the sound through into the smearing effect the lower it goes, a higher threshold will only allow the louder frequency bins through).

These are just basics of the effect, but at least it can get you started with a solid foundation of the effect(Nomak is pushing some kind of synth sound as a harmonic progression through the effect while their beat is behind it, so don't be confused by the use of drums in my patch). You could also try higher-quality settings on the pfft~ object: instead of "2048 2" try "4096 4" "8192 8" any combinations similar to those in powers of 2 and also try higher sample-rates and signal-vector sizes in your "Audio Options" window for Max itself.
