how do (or can) you disable double-click > create new obj?
hi
the title says it all..
i'm absolutely sure i'm missing something totally obvious (i still have one foot firmly in max4), but this feature is something that i cant for the life of me find in the (otherwise very customizable) preferences pane, nor in the forums or documentation. could someone point me in the right direction, and make me feel stupid?
thankyouplease
ol
hold on..
by 'create new obj', what i mean is the object palette. how do you stop it coming up when you double click on an unlocked patcher? thought i would've found it myself by now but i aint..
cheers
ol
Excuse me if this is obvious but... why would you want to?
TTBOMK the behavior is hard-wired, just as double-clicking on an object to open it is hard-wired in Finder and double-clicking to select a word in every text app is hard-wired.
the actual double-click interval time may be hard-wired, but i don't see why double-clicking on a blank patch to bring up the object palette need be - it wasn't in max 4. i just want to be able to disable the function, like one might want to disable auto-completion, or anything else for that matter.. that's what this here software's for innit? customizationabilityness..
nevermind
The double-click interval is customized in System Preferences, Keyboard & Mouse panel, Mouse tab. This is global for all applications.
The semantics of the double-click action are typically not customizable. Again: can you turn off double-click in your word processor?
Look, I'm not interested in having a fight over whether or not this should be customizable. It ain't. If you're gonna shoot the messenger, I've got better things to do.

no but it wasnt there in max 4 and this idea is right.
peter: no fights or shooting of messengers intended. my last sentence was trying to make light of it actually, i apologise if this was lost in translation
i can live with the object palette popping up when im trying to select a patch cord. it might convince me to sort out a new laptop without a sticky trackpad hey
peace!
This happens to me too. I'm not an object palette guy. Would be nice if there was an option, but it's not a deal breaker.
If its a PC trackpad thing, most laptops allow to disable the clicking function of the track pad. Whenever I sit at a Windoof Laptop its annoying me in any program...
Another option would be to use a mouse and disable the trackpad completely...
I would love to customize the double clicks for objects by the way, and why not the double click in empty space.
With maxinterface.json Max is highly customizable, but I didn't find any entry for the double click that opens the object palette. Maybe Emmanuel knows if there is a trick to disable it...

Don't double click...

I don't entirely follow the "It wasn't there in Max 4" argument.
Max 5 is a new program that does lots of things differently from its predecessors. Max 4 didn't have a Presentation Mode, multiple Undo, multiple Views, keyboard shortcuts for instantiating objects, and lots of other features.
I understand the argument that some (not all!) of these novelties can be subverted (turned off), mostly by editing text files in the init/ folder (not exactly state-of-the-art User Interface Design, or maybe it's just deliberately retro, but that's another story).
OTOH, there is a lot--seriously a lot--to be said in favor of having some fundamental user interface conventions hard-wired in a system. The semantics of the double-click is typically one of these. I mean, if you don't want double-click to do anything, then why double-click at all?
If the problem is, as Stephan suggests, that a Trackpad or other mouse alternative is set to map some gesture to double-click, and that gesture occurs accidentally, then it's a global issue effecting every app on your machine. Instead of asking to subvert the double-click action in Max (and Word, and Finder, and Mail... and every other application that you use every day) why not just turn off the gesture mapping? That's done globally in SysPrefs (Control Panels in W-land).
If it's a problem with the double-click interval (as suggested by the thread subtitle), it's also a global issue. The solution is already documented in this thread.
So, the basic question remains: Why would you want to turn double-click off? So far it just sounds like you want to climb Mt. Everest ("because it's there").
Really curious.

hee, perhaps a tad excessive?
Just to be clear, I didn't intend this thread as a feature request, and nor was i being faux-naive. I genuinely assumed it'd be in the preferences under a name that i'd missed. It wasn't/isn't and that's the matter closed for me.
As for why I want to, the reason's simple. The double-click > opject palette feature interferes with the fluidity of patching in max/MSP, for me. Some people agree! It perhaps wont be so much of an issue once I fully phase out max4, as it was in this environment that my habits (for better or worse) were formed.
But i'll heed Tommy Cooper's advice. Altogther now..
"Doctor doctor, it hurts when i do this. Well stop doing it then!"
