How to display a string (text) in Max?

I have Javascript widget pointing to a file containing:

function go() { outlet(0, 'a'); }

connected to an lcd widget (which another forum answer said to use to display strings).

But it just says: lcd . doesn't understand message a

And the message and number widgets can't display strings either. What can I use?
