How to get started with JavaScript in Max?

I am a beginning programmer with some experience in C and Processing (Java) thinking it's a good idea learn how to use JavaScript for Max. For somebody with no experience in JavaScript should I learn it first (by taking a Lynda.com course in it) or are the references that Cycling '74 makes enough to learn javascript for Max? I am kind of scared away from taking a class in Javascript because they all seem to emphasize JavaScript's use for the web and I don't see the relevance to Max. I think a video class would be easier than the suggestion C'74 makes (i.e. go to https://developer.mozilla.org) though. Can anybody recommend the best process for someone in my shoes?

I think the best place to start is JS tutorials in Max help file.

You think that these would be sufficient for someone with basic programming (and no javaScript) experience?
