how to get the vst parameter#

Have a question on the vst~ object, I am building a standalone and it lets user to use and control vst plugin, but how can they know the parameter# for the exact parameter they want to modulate? I figured out that I can find the param# in logic by switching to the parameter view and count the actual number, but is there a better way to get the # faster?
