How to make Ableton sound/midi affect Visuals. Newbie!!

Hi!

I´m an Ableton Live user, and I really want to get my music to "become visual".
Can somebody help me with information on "the basic needs", and "how to´s".

My music is ambient-dub/minimal. And the visuals should be fairly minimal and simple.
(Visuals like "Alva Noto" or the "Raster-noton" guys.)

Eg.
Wich software do I need?
How do I connect audio/midi to Video source (the easiest way)?
Do I need a second computer (I guess so)?

Hoping for respons from someone out there!!

Regards
Elektrolytt!

Hi :)

RIght, software wise it would probably be useful to purchase the Max for live as well as MaxMSP with Jitter. This way you can link up whatever you're doing in midi/audio from your ableton to your Max patches- and Jitter is the visual side of the programme. There are plenty of help patches that come complete with the MaxMSP package; this way i doubt you'll need another computer (unless yours cant cope with the processing, which most modern computers can). Another display, on the other hand, is probably beneficial when you're working with visuals AND patching, saves a lot of faffing about with windows.

Your question is kind of vague, but hopefully this clears some stuff out for you :)

Hi!
And thanx for your reply.
I kind of got the answers I needed, so thats perfect.
I´ll try out some of the patches, and start messing about.

Can I run OpenGL stuff in Jitter?

Yes, Jitter has an OpenGL engine that you can use to create visuals. For examples, you can look inside the MaxMSP examples folder, and the Jitter tutorials. Jitter can also be used inside of a Max for Live device, and depending on what you're doing, might work just fine. If you are just doing minimal geometry things, it'll probably run in Max for Live without a hitch.

You can use a separate computer, but it can work pretty well to run it on the same computer. We've gotten pretty good results with our CellDNA software (which is a big Max patch for video playback) and linking it to Live with some Max for Live devices using udpsend and udpreceive. Like andrew says, if it's simple, you can probably just run it in M4L, but you may grow out of it!
