IS the Max5 download also a demo?
Hi,
I assume that the max5 download at
https://cycling74.com/download/Max5_34740.zip
is not a demo.
I assume this because when I try and install it (as a non-owner on XP) I get to 99% installed and then the process stalls.
It's very hard to kill the process too.
Actually I seem to remember exactly the same thing happening when I tried to install your previous version (4.63) to try that out too.
I've been trying to try this software for around 4 years now, and failing badly. People tell me it's great software, I'd love to find that out for myself!
So, is there a demo, or is it just me?
The download is a fully functional install that will run free for 30 days.
The Jitter portion keeps saying expired for me. My Jitter from MAX4 was expired, but why should the new version be expired right away?
yes, OK thanks for the responses.
It doesn't install for me. It just stalls.
Attached file is all I get from Max5.01 Demo, and it's also all I ever got from Max V4.63
the new runtime works, which is something.

As reported earlier there's an issue with PACE on windows (short
version, unplug your ethernet cable, or turn off your network while
you install):

I unplugged my network cable and the install completed.
Thanks for that, it must be what stopped me installing the demos for Max 4 too.
Now I just have to try and find enough free hours within the next 30 days to try the program out. The last time I successfully installed a Max demo was in 2002 or so, and I immediately got really busy with work and I only had about 4 hours of actual trial in the 30 day period.
Hopefully that doesn't happen again because it's really annoying having to wait a year or so between trying out the app again!

This time it will take longer, there isn't every year a paid upgrade
which renew your 30 day trial. Though if you buy a new computer you can
do it again...
In case you get hooked, just buy it... ;-)

thanks Stefan,
yes Cycling really like to pile the pressure on a prospective purchaser!
My issue in the past has been - I haven't got to the point of being hooked. I got to the point of saying "ah I seem to have time to try lesson four now, ... Oh! Timeout!"
It's almost Like Cycling don't want people to try the app.
I guess their Demo limitation works out fine if you have a guaranteed free month, but I work a full day and have music commitments in the evenings. It's 10pm here and I will be working till 2am writing a specification doc. No time for Max tonight, and probably not tomorrow either, etc, etc.
I very much doubt I will have time to "get hooked", within 30 days I will most likely total 8 hours of Demo time.
I look forward to downloading the Demo for Max 6
If you don't have the time to learn it now I'm not sure you'd ever have the time, barring something in your life changing.
You should ask yourself what you think you might stand to gain from learning Max. Is there something you can't do in Live (I'm assuming you're that angstrom) that you would really like to be able to do? Then figure out if it's even worth it.
Well, it's hard to say when I will have free time. I'm self employed which means there's no telling what will happen. In 5 days time I may have 7 free days, or not. I don't have a fixed timetable - and that's exactly my issue with a time limited demo.
As far as whether I need Max, well that's what I'm trying to find out!
I currently do all my processing In SynthMaker, which is quite fine for my needs in most areas, but as Ableton and Cycling are linking up in some mysterious way I thought I ought to check out what I may or may not be expected to work with.
A few friends work with Max and are evangelical about it, often saying things like :"you would be great at it", etc. But I'm never sure whether that really means: "you would be great at debugging my patches".
I am reasonably convinced that I will stick with SynthMaker, I own it and I know it, both of which are major pluses. I have yet to find out what the pluses of Max are, I may yet be suprised.

I think 30 days is plenty, If you don't touch the main application and
always open the runtime, you can look at the patches as long as you
want. Then if you know you got the time, start the demo...

You can also purchase a limited 9 month license, or better do the demo
in the holidays, but I guess its too late now. But you might also just
ask for your vacation if cycling would exceptionally give you another 30
or 25 days... Asking doesn't cost too much... ;-)

What is synthmaker and how do i get it to run on osx? ;-)
You'd be awesome at debugging my patches. So start doing those tuts.. Some good looping stuff in Max 5 for a new angstrolooper...
Heh,
SM might not be too good for you, but it works for me!

hmm, the img tags don't really work on this board do they.
