Issues with JAVA on Windows 10

I am using Max with Ableton and I have some issues setting up JAVA. When I create an object in MAX I get an error message. Please see below. Java seems to be installed ok and plesase see the output below. Any suggestions?
Error in MAX
mxj: could not find Java 2 Runtime Environment.
Error loading:
(mxj) mxj_platform_init failed. Could not initialize the Java Runtime Environment.
Please check your Java installation. http://java.sun.com
Unable to create JVM

In cmd, java seems to be running fine:
C:\Users\jkkk>java -version
java version "1.8.0_211"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_211-b12)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 25.211-b12, mixed mode)

If anyone else has this issue then it is important that the following link is used for installing the jre on windows: Windows Offline (64-bit)

THANKS!! this worked for me. I spnt an hour or more screwing around with this. Why doesn't Cycling74 just TELL us which one to use?!?!?

not relevant, but there is a [nonjavamode] external for MacOS9 - where max never had java support. i wonder what it does?
