jitter & Logitech Quickcam vision pro

Hi all,

only a quick question. Am looking for a reliable webcam to use with jitter. I read other related topic on the jitter forum, and it's not clear whether USB cams really work or not. I see the Logitech USB quickcam vision pro is natively supported for Mac. Did anybody experienced it in jitter? How does it work?

Thank you very much.

I do not recommend Logitech quickcams. If you happen to have one and you can get it to work with the macam driver then got for it, but I would recommend you look into other cameras first. Logitechs compatibility with quicktime is spotty at best and you'll never know when an incremental update will render it unusable.

Not sure about Logitech, or on Mac, but I've used several with Windows: Dynex Webcam, and a Microsoft Webcam. No problems until the Dynex started giving me "blue screens of death". Probably an outdated driver. It was seriously annoying and I don't dare use it anymore. what the hell?

The Microsoft one works great, but of course not for Mac. Whatever you get, just use jit.qt.grab for it. Not sure if they are "hot-pluggable" on Mac, they aren't on PC (that is, you need to have it plugged in before opening Max). They really add a lot to your setup. I wouldn't go higher than 640x480 for the hardware, seems like overkill. I also do the jit.qt.grab at 320x240 to save on processing, and it still looks fine. Of course, the video quality isn't what you'll get with a camcorder, but for the price (some are like $20) they are great.

stefano, did you choose a camera?

I own a Logitech USB quickcam vision pro and it works on a Mac with Jitter, without any driver. And it makes nice pictures.

In relation to webcams: Don't buy Microsoft HD-5000 if you're on mac (obviously ;P ). I can see it in jit.qt.grab. I tested it and it gives a distorted image when catching motion (blurry and with lots of trails). By the way, if anyone knows how and if I can make this to work, please pass it along!

@ Eric: Do you have experience with using the audio on the Logitech? I have had some serious issues concerning samplerate (always going to 16000Hz instead of 44100) and I have been unable to resolve the issue.

Sorry, I never used audio from a webcam.
