jMax to Max

Hello,

I?ve written a project with jMax, the free software version of the Max family (there?s also PureData..). If you have used jMax you know it?s not very easy to use, the help is quite limited ant there is no tutorial at all. And the program itself has some major limitations too..

Can you import a .jmax file to Max? Maybe it?s time for me to find the money to buy the real deal.. My project is quite complex and I wouldn?t want to start from scrach all over again.

cheers

jMax and Max share the same philosophy, but it's not implemented in
the same way, the objects are not the same (different names,
different behaviors, structures...). If you start a project, don't
expect you'll able to move from one to another software easily. It
should be possible to do something like opening patches but, as the
implementations are really different, it's certainly better to
restart everything from scratch... so, maybe you have to make the
right choice before beginning.

my personal 0.02$ :-)

Jean-Francois, do you mean the Max demo? Or are there useful docs and tutorials for jMax Im not aware of.. beside the help files inside jMax?

Many thanks to both of you

I didn?t assume it?s possible, it was more like a hopefull wish. So, back to the drawing board.. At least now i have an idea how the structure of the project might be with Max.

And to make it clear, i wasn?t saying jMax is a poor software. I realise it?s a freeware and from what i?ve understood, an open source project. So, it?s quite understandable the help files aren?t perfect. And i have a feeling you should have a bit more knowledge to master it than i have.

You should also look into the FTM project at Ircam, which is a port of
the more interesting parts of jMax to Max. The support of jMax stopped
with this transfer. There are even betas of FTM for Windows Max and Pd
out now.

And there is this guy Krzysztof Czaja from the Pd community who seems to
be able to read and translate all kinds of max flavour patch formats
into each other. He made the cyclone library which enables a rudimentary
translation of Max patches to Pd.
